The NEST Program
An Introduction to the NEST Program
The NeuroSensory Therapeutic (NEST) Program was developed by Phil Bird (Psychologist) and Rhiannon Pilgrim (Occupational Therapist). The NEST Program is an intervention with a focus on brain development and improving relationships through integrating psychology and occupational therapy. It is an intervention that seeks to support children and adolescents who have experienced trauma to regulate their nervous system while developing attachment security with their caregivers.
Children who have experienced trauma may present with a range of challenges which may include:
sleep difficulties
hyperactivity
impulsive behaviours
sensory processing difficulties
anxiety
emotional outbursts
oppositional or aggressive behaviour
The NEST Program supports children and their parents/caregivers to learn the essential skills and strategies to support sequential brain development. Key areas of focus for the program include sensory processing, attunement and co-regulation, emotion regulation, play skills, social skills and building the capacity for resilience.
When we focus on meeting the needs of safety and regulation, connection, learning and resilience will follow.
